News on the Trail
June 1, 2006
Thank you all. Through the tremendous support from the people and businesses of Paris and Lamar County, Leadership Lamar County Class of 2004 completed the Trail de Paris and City of Paris stepped up to maintain this privately created, public park.
We are extremely proud of our community's effort and support, your generosity was boundless. We will never forget how you enabled us to build the Trail de Paris. Every penny given and every drop of sweat was required to build the Trail de Paris. To everyone that helped, thank you for a job well done!
Not counting intersections, there are now 2.58 miles of asphalt pavement running in a 12-foot wide ribbon from 12th Street SE to Loop 286 along the beautifully canopied corridor. If you park on the Paris Junior College parking lot by the vocational buildings - which is our recommendation and request - you can walk on the trail at almost its midpoint and travel from one end to the other and back to where you began for more than 5 miles of walking, riding or running.
Leadership Lamar County Class of 2004 was proud to entrust this completed section of recreational facility to care of the City of Paris. While our belief that this is one of the most scenic and beautiful multi-use trails in Texas and our surrounding states is certainly our opinion, we have found many others who share our view. Please come out and see if you agree.
There are still some signs, benches and commemorative markers left to install, and those will be completed as soon as possible, but current efforts are feverishly chasing federal funding to extend the Trail de Paris to the eastern limit of the City of Paris and to connect it directly to the recreational areas behind Love Civic Center.
As federal funding is currently being allocated for projects of this nature, the Friends of the Trail de Paris will continue to pursue the extension and enhancement of this trail through federal grant programs designed for this type of facility. Local officials of TxDOT, the city of Paris, and other agencies have already indicated their support of subsequent additions to the Trail de Paris.
Sincerely,
The Leadership Lamar County Class 2004
